Entry and opening times
Is there an entry fee for the Błędów Desert?
No. Visiting the desert and using the trails and viewpoints is free.
Is the desert open 24 hours a day, all year?
Yes, it is open land. Toilets and some services are seasonal.
How much time should I allow?
For Róża Wiatrów and a short walk, 1–2 hours. For several viewpoints or a walk to the footbridge, half a day. You will find route ideas on the page Hiking in the Błędów Desert.
Parking, toilets, food
How much does parking at Róża Wiatrów cost?
The first 15 minutes are free. After that it costs 5 PLN/hour for cars and motorbikes and 15 PLN/hour for coaches, campervans and trailers. There is a daily maximum, and disabled visitors park free of charge. You can pay by cash or card at the pay station; the exit barrier takes cards only. Are there toilets at the Błędów Desert?
Yes, at Róża Wiatrów. They are paid. The toilets at the car park building are open all year; those at the viewpoint only in season.
Where can I eat near the Błędów Desert?
In season there are food trucks at Róża Wiatrów. Out of season, bring your own food or eat in Klucze or Olkusz.
Dogs, children, pushchairs
Can I bring my dog to the Błędów Desert?
Yes, the desert is a popular place to walk dogs. We recommend a lead, as there is wildlife in the area and a military zone in the north. In summer, watch out for hot sand, which can burn paws. Bring water and a bowl for your dog.
Is the Błędów Desert suitable for children?
Yes. Róża Wiatrów is the best place to start, with a playground, toilets and short nature trails. Children especially enjoy looking for antlion traps in the sand.
Can I get around with a pushchair or wheelchair?
Róża Wiatrów has ramps for wheelchairs. The concrete walking and cycling path and the footbridge over the Biała Przemsza are also suitable. A pushchair will not manage on the sand itself.
Drones, campfires, camping, photos
Can I fly a drone over the Błędów Desert?
Only with the permission of the Head of the Klucze Municipality (Wójt Gminy Klucze). The fee for drone use is 500 PLN net. Before flying, also check the airspace zones in the DroneMap app. Flying over the military area is not allowed without the army’s permission.
Can I light a campfire or pitch a tent?
Only with the municipality’s permission and in a designated place. An overnight stay for a group of up to 10 people costs 50 PLN, and a campfire in a designated place 50 PLN. A campfire anywhere else carries a 300 PLN fine.
Do I need permission for a photo shoot?
For family, commercial or wedding shoots, yes. Fees range from 100 to 700 PLN. Details in the visitor rules, permits and fees.
Can I drive a car or quad bike onto the desert?
No, not without the municipality’s permission. Entering the military area is strictly forbidden.
Military area and safety
Is the whole Błędów Desert open to visitors?
No. The northern part (about 375 ha) is a military area used for paratrooper training. Entry is forbidden; do not go past the warning signs. During exercises the municipality may also temporarily close the area around the Dąbrówka viewpoint and publishes notices about it.
What should I watch out for in summer?
The heat. The sand heats up to 60°C and there is no shade on the desert. Go in the morning or late afternoon, and bring plenty of water, a hat and sunscreen.
Are there ticks?
As in any forest. Use insect repellent at the edges of the desert and in the woods, and check yourself afterwards.
When to visit
What is the best time of year to visit the Błędów Desert?
Spring and early autumn: it is warm but not too hot, and there are fewer people. In summer come in the morning or towards evening; sunsets over the sand are spectacular. In winter, after snowfall, the desert looks completely different.
When is it least crowded?
On weekdays and outside the summer holidays. On sunny weekends the car park at Róża Wiatrów fills up quickly, so it is worth arriving early.
