Hiking in the Błędów Desert – walking routes and trails

The Błędów Desert is best explored on foot. You can cycle around it, but to reach the sand you will have to walk anyway. Below are four routes, from a short family walk to a full-day hike.

1. Short walk: Róża Wiatrów and the nature trails

Who for: families with children, seniors, pushchairs (on the boardwalks)
Time: about 1 hour

Start at the Róża Wiatrów viewpoint in Klucze. It has wooden boardwalks overlooking the sand, toilets, a playground and a car park. Two short nature trails with information boards start here:

• red – “Wind processes”: how the wind shapes the dunes,
• green – “Natural succession”: how the forest returns to the sand.

Along the way there are shelters and viewing platforms. A good choice for a first visit.

2. Loop past the ponds: Czubatka – ponds – Róża Wiatrów

Length: about 5.4 km
Time: 1.5–2 hours
Surface: sand and forest tracks. Difficult with a pushchair.

Start at Czubatka, the highest viewpoint (382 m above sea level). Walk down forest tracks to the Red and Green Ponds (Staw Czerwony, Staw Zielony), flooded former quarry pits. Continue to Róża Wiatrów and return to Czubatka along the edge of the desert. On this route you will see sand, forest and water.

3. To the footbridge over the Biała Przemsza

Length: about 3.5 km one way from Róża Wiatrów, about 7 km there and back
Time: 2–2.5 hours
Surface: concrete walking and cycling path and a wooden footbridge. Suitable for pushchairs.

From Róża Wiatrów, follow the concrete path along the desert to the wooden footbridge over the Biała Przemsza valley. The footbridge is about 400 m long and has been open since summer 2025. It crosses wet meadows and links the southern and northern parts of the desert. If you have the energy, carry on to the Dąbrówka Hill viewpoint in Chechło. Cyclists use the path too, so keep to the right.

4. Full day: the yellow Desert Trail

Length: about 26 km (the whole trail from Błędów to Ryczów)
Time: a full day. The Klucze – Błędów section takes about 5 hours.
Waymarks: yellow

This is the only waymarked hiking trail that crosses the whole desert. It runs from Błędów across the Biała Przemsza valley and over Czubatka to Klucze, then via Jaroszowiec to Ryczów. Plan your return: by train from Jaroszowiec Olkuski station, or with a second car left at the end.

Before you head onto the sand

• There is no shade. In summer the sand heats up to 60°C, and every year emergency services help visitors who have fainted from the heat or got lost. Walk in the morning or late afternoon. Take at least 1.5 litres of water per person.
• Shoes: closed shoes are best. Sand quickly gets into sandals, and bare feet can get burnt.
• Sand is tiring. A kilometre on loose sand feels like two on a path. Leave yourself extra time.
• The northern part of the desert is a military area. Do not go past the warning signs. During exercises the municipality sometimes closes the Dąbrówka area too.
• There is mobile signal, but it is easy to take a wrong turn in the forest. A map on your phone helps.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to explore the Błędów Desert on foot?

For Róża Wiatrów and a short walk, 1–2 hours is enough. Allow half a day for the loop past the ponds or the walk to the footbridge. Crossing the whole desert on the yellow trail takes a full day.

Are there marked trails in the Błędów Desert?

Yes. The yellow Desert Trail (Błędów – Ryczów) crosses the desert, there are two nature trails at Róża Wiatrów, and a concrete walking and cycling path with a footbridge over the Biała Przemsza runs along the desert.

Can you walk anywhere in the desert?

In the southern part, yes, and entry is free. The northern part is a military area with no public access.

Where is the best place to start a walk with children?

At Róża Wiatrów. There is a car park, toilets, a playground, boardwalks and short nature trails.
